The Dentist SOLUTION to Snoring

Most other dental appliances designed for sleep are made for snoring.  Examples of these include any appliance that positions the mandibule forward.  Most popular examples are the Silent Nite and the TAP and the TAP III appliances.

Because they pull the lower jaw forward, sometimes people develop jaw tiredness and ultimately pain and ultimately need to release the pull.  The way this class of appliance work is to pull the jaw foward.  Because the tongue is attached to the lower jaw, it naturally goes forward as well.  Tongue forward means an open airway because in relaxed tongue and tongue that has lost muscle tone, it falls back and upward.  So the more release you give to alleviate your jaw strain, the less effective such appliance is.

The TAP I consists of a upper tray-like member that adapts to your teeth, and a lower member connected by a hook.  This design is superior to the Silent Nite because it allows freedom of lateral jaw movement.  There is a screw the moves the hook foward and back connected to a knob that turns.  The user can freely turn as much or as little as he/she desires based on the tolerance of the jaw joint and muscles.  The TAP III is a small, more compact version of the same thing.  This new design is more comfortable while providing the same result.  Part of the compactness owes to a "key" that advances the hook rathan than a large knob.  Most dentists uses the Silent Nite because it's easy to make and requires little adjustment and patient doesn't have to pay a lot of money for it.  TAP costs a lot more but is more adjustable and customizable.  Silent Nite costs on average $650-900 where TAP and TAP III costs about twice that.
